CA Inter Accounting Study Plan for the October Attempt
A phase-wise, accounting-only preparation timetable for CA Inter students — anchored to ICAI study material, three revision cycles, daily problem targets, and mock-test timing that fits working students too.
By the SuperAccountant Editorial Team
You opened your ICAI study material, counted the chapters, did the maths — and quietly panicked. There are twelve chapters in the CA Inter Accounting paper, the October exam is closer than it feels, and every plan you find online talks about "all eight subjects" without ever zooming in on this one. This post fixes that.
What follows is an accounting-only, phase-wise study plan built around the ICAI's own study material for Paper 1 (Accounting) of the CA Intermediate course. It works whether you are a full-time student with six hours a day or a working student managing three.
Why Accounting Deserves Its Own Plan
CA Inter Accounting is not a memory paper — it is a doing paper. Every mark you lose in the exam comes from either (a) a conceptual gap you never noticed or (b) a problem you understood in theory but could not reproduce under time pressure.
The ICAI's official study material for Paper 1 covers areas including financial statements of companies under the Companies Act 2013, partnership accounts, hire-purchase, lease, investment accounts, insurance claims, and more. Each topic has its own logic, and rushing from chapter to chapter without closing loops means errors compound in the exam hall.
A focused accounting revision plan solves this by giving each chapter a fixed slot, a daily problem quota, and a checkpoint before you move on.
The Three-Phase Framework
Think of your preparation in three distinct phases, not a single long grind.
| Phase | Duration | Primary Goal | Daily Time Target |
|---|---|---|---|
| Phase 1 — Concept Coverage | Weeks 1–6 | Read + solve ICAI Study Material examples | 3–4 hrs (full-time) / 1.5–2 hrs (working) |
| Phase 2 — Intensive Revision | Weeks 7–10 | Re-solve past ICAI RTPs and MTPs | 4–5 hrs / 2–3 hrs |
| Phase 3 — Mock & Gap-Closing | Weeks 11–14 | Full mock tests + chapter-level gap fixing | 5–6 hrs / 3–4 hrs |
For an October attempt (exam typically in late October), count fourteen weeks back from your exam date and mark the three phases on your calendar before you read another line.
Phase 1 — Concept Coverage (Weeks 1–6)
Goal: Read every chapter once, solve every Illustration in the ICAI Study Material, and note every concept that confuses you.
Chapter allocation (six weeks, two chapters per week)
A practical sequence that builds on itself:
- Week 1 — Company Final Accounts (Part 1): Preparation of financial statements under Schedule III of the Companies Act 2013
- Week 2 — Company Final Accounts (Part 2): Cash Flow Statements (AS 3)
- Week 3 — Partnership Accounts (Admission and Retirement)
- Week 4 — Partnership Accounts (Dissolution, including piecemeal distribution)
- Week 5 — Hire-Purchase and Instalment Purchase; Lease Accounting
- Week 6 — Investment Accounts; Insurance Claims; Departmental Accounts
Daily problem target during Phase 1: A minimum of three full Illustrations from the Study Material — not just reading the solution, but covering it and attempting the working notes yourself first.
Mini-example: In Week 1, if you are studying the Schedule III Balance Sheet format, take a trial balance with ten line items — say, Share Capital ₹10,00,000, General Reserve ₹2,50,000, Trade Payables ₹1,80,000, Plant & Machinery (Cost ₹8,00,000, Depreciation ₹2,00,000) — and draft the Balance Sheet entirely from scratch before checking your answer. That muscle memory is what earns marks.
Checkpoint test (end of each week): Solve one past ICAI MTP or RTP question from that chapter, timed at the standard mark-to-minute ratio (1 mark = approximately 1.5 minutes in CA Inter).
Phase 2 — Intensive Revision (Weeks 7–10)
Goal: Re-solve every topic you marked as confusing in Phase 1, and begin working through ICAI's Revision Test Papers (RTPs) and Mock Test Papers (MTPs) at chapter level.
The ICAI uploads RTPs and MTPs for each attempt on its official portal at icai.org. Use these — they are the closest signal you have of actual exam questions.
What to do each day in Phase 2
- First 45 minutes: Re-solve one chapter of weakness (open your Phase 1 confusion list).
- Next 90 minutes: Solve one full MTP/RTP question set — all sub-parts, all working notes, timed.
- Last 30 minutes: Review your answer against the official solution and make a one-line error note ("Missed minority interest adjustment" or "Used wrong formula for average due date").
Daily problem target during Phase 2: Five problems minimum — two from weak chapters, three from MTPs/RTPs.
Working-student note: If you have only 2–3 hours on weekdays, compress the above into one focused problem and one revision topic per evening, and use your weekends to run the timed question sets.
Phase 3 — Mock & Gap-Closing (Weeks 11–14)
Goal: Simulate exam conditions every third day and spend the remaining days closing the gaps those mocks reveal.
Mock-test schedule
- Day 1: Full 3-hour mock (100 marks, mix of chapters as per ICAI pattern)
- Days 2–3: Deep-dive on every question you lost marks on
- Day 4: Another full mock
- Repeat until the exam
The standard CA Inter Accounting paper is 100 marks, 3 hours. Your mock should replicate that exactly — printed question paper, no notes, no phone.
Scoring benchmark: Aim for 60+ in your first mock, 70+ by Week 13. If you are consistently below 50, go back to Phase 2 for the specific chapters that are dragging your score.
The gap-closing drill
After each mock, list every chapter that cost you more than 5 marks. For each chapter:
- Re-read the relevant ICAI Study Material section (just the concept notes, not all illustrations again).
- Solve two fresh problems from that chapter.
- Move on — do not over-correct one chapter at the cost of others.
Study Material and Resource Stack
Keep your resource stack tight. The ICAI's own material is the canonical source — do not supplement with ten different reference books.
Primary (non-negotiable):
- ICAI Study Material for Paper 1 — Accounting (current attempt edition)
- ICAI Practice Manual
- ICAI MTPs and RTPs for the current and previous two attempts
Secondary (optional, use only if a concept is genuinely unclear):
- ICAI's e-learning modules on the ICAI Learning Management System (LMS)
- For accounting standards (AS 1 to AS 29 applicable at Inter level), the ICAI's Accounting Standards Board publications
Do not use: Random YouTube lectures as your primary source. Watch a short video to clarify a confused concept, never to replace the Study Material.
Daily Timetable Template
Here is a realistic daily slot structure for both student types:
Full-time student (6 hours/day)
- 6:00–8:00 am — New chapter / concept study (Study Material)
- 8:00–9:00 am — Solve Illustrations from that chapter
- 5:00–6:30 pm — Revision of yesterday's topic + MTP/RTP problems
- 7:00–8:30 pm — Timed mock question OR gap-closing drill
Working student (3 hours/day)
- 6:00–7:30 am — One Study Material section + one Illustration
- 8:00–9:00 pm — One MTP/RTP problem, timed; review error notes
The working-student plan takes longer in calendar time — which is fine. Extend Phase 1 to eight weeks if needed, but never skip the timed problem quota. Consistent daily practice beats weekend cramming every single time in this paper.
What Most Students Get Wrong (and How to Avoid It)
- Passive reading: Reading a solved example and thinking you "know" it. You do not know it until you can reproduce the working notes with the book closed.
- Skipping working notes in practice: Examiners award marks for correct working notes even if the final figure is wrong. Practise writing them fully every time.
- Ignoring AS disclosures: Questions on financial statements often carry 2–4 marks for disclosure requirements under applicable Accounting Standards. Read the disclosure portion of each AS at least once.
- No timed practice before Phase 3: Students who first try a timed mock in Phase 3 are almost always shocked by how slowly they write under pressure. Introduce timed practice from the very first MTP in Phase 2.
Want to test where your accounting concepts actually stand right now? The SuperAccountant cohort programme includes structured CA Inter sessions with worked examples, peer accountability, and live doubt resolution — exactly the kind of environment that turns a decent student into a first-attempt passer.
A Quick Revision Checklist Before the Exam
Use this in the final two weeks:
- Can you prepare a Schedule III Balance Sheet and Statement of Profit & Loss from a trial balance without referring to the format?
- Have you solved at least one full partnership dissolution problem (including piecemeal distribution) under time pressure?
- Do you know the difference between AS 9 (Revenue Recognition) and the disclosure requirements under it?
- Have you attempted at least four full 100-mark mocks?
- Have you reviewed your error notes from every mock at least once?
- Is your handwriting in working notes legible and clearly labelled?
If you tick all six, you are genuinely ready. If two or more remain blank, you know exactly where this week's hours go.
The October attempt is winnable with a focused, chapter-wise accounting plan — not by grinding every subject simultaneously and hoping for the best. Anchor your preparation to the ICAI Study Material, hit your daily problem quota, and use mock tests as diagnostic tools rather than just score cards.
