First Accounting Job Resume for Fresh Commerce Graduates

You finished your B.Com or M.Com, you have a decent percentage, and you are applying to every junior accountant and accounts assistant role you can find — yet the calls are not coming. The problem is almost never your qualification. It is your resume. Most fresher resumes are copies of a college sample that was written before Tally Prime, GST, and TDS compliance became table-stakes skills. This guide fixes that.

Why Accounting Resumes for Freshers Fail in India

Hiring managers at mid-sized CA firms, trading companies, and manufacturing units spend fewer than 10 seconds on a fresher resume. They are scanning for three things: software they actually use, tasks they do not want to train from zero, and a clean layout that does not waste their time.

Here is what kills a fresh graduate's chances before the first interview:

  • Generic objective lines like "seeking a challenging position to grow my skills" — says nothing, costs you 3 seconds of the hiring manager's attention
  • Listing "MS Office" without specifying Excel functions (VLOOKUP, pivot tables, conditional formatting)
  • No mention of GST despite every company filing GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B every month
  • Education section placed last — for a fresher, your B.Com marks and relevant subjects are assets, not afterthoughts
  • One resume sent everywhere — an accounts assistant at a retail chain needs different keywords than one at a CA firm handling audit

The Right Format: Section Order That Works for Freshers

There is no single "best" format, but for a fresh commerce graduate in India, a reverse-chronological layout with a skills-first approach consistently outperforms a pure chronological one. Follow this section order:

  1. Header — Name, phone, email, city, LinkedIn (optional)
  2. Career Objective — 2 lines, role-specific
  3. Key Skills — a concise 2-column list
  4. Education — B.Com / M.Com with percentage, institution, year
  5. Internship / Project Work — even a 1-month CA firm internship counts
  6. Certifications — Tally Prime, Excel, GST practitioner courses
  7. Extra-curricular / Achievements — keep it short

Keep the resume to one page. Recruiters at Big 4 back-offices, KPMG's Shared Services, and Deloitte's Hyderabad delivery centres explicitly instruct screeners to reject two-page fresher resumes. One exception: if you have a full-year articleship under a CA, a well-structured second page is acceptable.

Writing a Career Objective That Gets Read

Your objective must name the role, name your strongest skill, and hint at value you bring — all in two sentences. Compare these:

Weak: "To obtain a responsible position in a reputed organisation where I can utilise my education and skills for organisational growth."

Strong: "B.Com graduate (78%, Sri Venkateswara College, Delhi, 2024) with hands-on Tally Prime and GST filing exposure seeking a Junior Accountant role at a growth-stage SME. Ready to contribute to accounts payable, TDS working, and monthly reconciliation from day one."

The second version tells the manager the college, the score, the software, and the exact tasks. That is the 10-second test passed.

The Keywords That Actually Appear in Job Postings

Accounts assistant and finance assistant job descriptions in India repeat a narrow set of technical terms. If your resume does not contain them, an ATS (Applicant Tracking System) will filter you out before a human even reads it.

Keyword CategoryTerms to Include in Your Resume
Accounting SoftwareTally Prime, Zoho Books, QuickBooks, MS Excel
Excel FunctionsVLOOKUP, HLOOKUP, Pivot Table, SUMIF, Conditional Formatting
GST TasksGSTR-1, GSTR-3B, e-Way Bill, Input Tax Credit reconciliation
TDS/TCSTDS deduction, Form 16A, Form 26Q, TCS under Sec 206C
Core AccountingAccounts payable/receivable, bank reconciliation, ledger posting, journal entries
ComplianceROC filing, MCA portal, payroll processing, PF/ESI basics
ReportingTrial balance, P&L preparation, balance sheet, monthly MIS

Do not stuff all of these into a list. Weave the relevant ones into your skills section and — more importantly — into your internship bullet points.

Turning Internship Bullets Into Proof of Skill

Even a 45-day internship at a local CA firm can be written powerfully if you describe outcomes, not just activities. The formula: Action verb + Task + Tool/Standard + Scale or Frequency.

Weak: "Helped with GST filing."

Strong: "Prepared and filed GSTR-3B returns for 6 SME clients on a monthly basis using Tally Prime, ensuring compliance with Sec 16(2)(c) CGST Act for Input Tax Credit eligibility."

Weak: "Did bank reconciliation."

Strong: "Performed monthly bank reconciliation for a trading firm with a monthly transaction volume of ₹18 lakh, identifying and correcting 3 mis-posted entries per cycle."

If you did a college project on financial statement analysis or costing, treat it the same way. Mention the company whose annual report you analysed (Infosys and Tata Steel publish detailed Ind AS-compliant reports that many colleges assign). Name the standard — Ind AS 16 for fixed assets, Ind AS 2 for inventory.

A Week-by-Week Preparation Plan Before You Start Applying

WeekAction
Week 1Build your base resume following the section order above. Install Tally Prime (free educational version available at tallysolutions.com).
Week 2Complete at least one free GST basics course. Bookmark the CBIC official portal and read the GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B filing guides so you can speak to them in interviews.
Week 3Practise 5 Excel functions daily: VLOOKUP, SUMIF, COUNTIF, pivot tables, and IF-nested formulas. Create a mock BRS (Bank Reconciliation Statement) in Excel.
Week 4Tailor your resume for 3 target job types: CA firm articleship/junior, accounts assistant at a manufacturing or trading company, and finance assistant at an IT/services firm. Each version should swap keywords from the table above.

Not sure which accounting track you are actually suited for? The SuperAccountant skills quiz takes under 5 minutes and maps your current knowledge gaps to the specific roles where you are most likely to clear the first interview.

Common Mistakes to Fix Before You Hit Send

Before you submit to any opening, run through this checklist:

  • Career objective names the exact role and the specific company type (CA firm / trading house / NBFC)
  • At least two GST-related terms appear in skills or internship bullets
  • Excel skills listed with specific functions, not just "MS Office"
  • Education section shows percentage or CGPA, not just degree name
  • File saved as PDF, named FirstName_LastName_Accountant_Resume.pdf
  • No spelling errors in accounting terminology (reconciliation, depreciation, payable — not "reconsiliation", "deprecisation", "payabel")
  • Mobile number is active — sounds obvious, many freshers list an old SIM number
  • If you are applying to KSA or Gulf roles, add your passport availability and notice period at the top

One more: do not add a photograph unless the job posting explicitly asks for one. Most Indian corporate HR teams and all international employers prefer photograph-free resumes.

Salary Benchmarks to Set Your Expectations

Knowing the market prevents you from rejecting decent offers or accepting below-market ones. These are approximate ranges for fresh B.Com graduates in India as of 2024–25:

  • Accounts assistant / Junior Accountant (SME, Tier 2 city): ₹12,000–₹18,000 per month
  • Accounts executive (mid-size company, metro): ₹18,000–₹28,000 per month
  • Finance assistant (MNC back-office, Hyderabad/Pune/Chennai): ₹22,000–₹35,000 per month
  • Big 4 back-office associate (KPMG GSC, Deloitte USI): ₹25,000–₹40,000 per month
  • CA articleship stipend (mandated by ICAI): ₹2,000–₹7,000 per month depending on city

A Tally Prime certification, an Excel advanced course, or a GST practitioner certificate can move you from the lower end to the upper end of your band within 6 months, because you reduce training costs for the employer from day one.

If you are curious about structured cohort training that takes you from resume to interview-ready in 6–8 weeks, the SuperAccountant cohort programme covers Tally Prime, GST compliance, TDS working, and mock interviews — built specifically for commerce freshers entering the job market.
