How to Become an Accountant in Saudi Arabia as an Indian
A step-by-step career roadmap for Indian B.Com, M.Com, and CA Inter students who want to land accounting jobs in KSA — covering qualifications, credentials, Iqama, ZATCA, and salary benchmarks.
By the SuperAccountant Editorial Team
You've finished your B.Com or you're mid-way through CA Inter, and someone — maybe a cousin in Riyadh, maybe a LinkedIn post — told you that accounting jobs in Saudi Arabia pay two to three times what you'd earn in a tier-2 Indian city. That's true. But the path from "I want to go" to "I have an offer letter and an Iqama" has several specific steps that nobody explains clearly. This post does exactly that.
Why KSA Is a Real Option for Indian Accountants Right Now
Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030 programme is reshaping the economy at speed. Mega-projects like NEOM, the Red Sea Project, and hundreds of SME privatisations all need finance teams. At the same time, ZATCA (the Zakat, Tax and Customs Authority) rolled out Phase 2 of its Fatoorah e-invoicing mandate — which means every VAT-registered business now needs staff who understand VAT at 15%, e-invoicing integration, and digital compliance. That is a skills gap Indian-trained accountants can fill, because many of us already understand GST logic, which is structurally similar to VAT.
According to ZATCA's official portal (zatca.gov.sa), Phase 2 e-invoicing integration has been rolling out in waves since January 2023 (Muharram 1444H). Businesses in each wave must connect their ERP to ZATCA's Fatoorah platform in real time. Employers are actively looking for accountants who can operate inside these systems — not just post journal entries.
Step 1 — Get the Right Qualification on Paper
KSA employers and the Saudi Ministry of Human Resources look at three things when they evaluate a foreign accountant's CV:
- Degree attestation — Your B.Com or M.Com degree must be attested by: (a) your university, (b) the HRD Ministry / State Education Department in India, (c) the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), and finally (d) the Saudi Embassy in India. This is called the attestation chain. Start early — it can take 6–10 weeks.
- Experience — Entry-level roles (Accounts Assistant, AR/AP Clerk) typically require 1–2 years. Senior roles require a recognised professional qualification.
- Professional certification — This is where you can differentiate yourself fast.
The most valued credentials for an Indian accountant targeting KSA roles, in rough order of employer recognition:
| Credential | Why it helps in KSA | Typical study time |
|---|---|---|
| CA (ICAI) / CA Inter | Highest recognition; ICAI has a Saudi chapter | Already in progress |
| CMA (ICMAI) | Strong for cost & management roles | 12–18 months |
| ACCA | Globally recognised; exemptions for B.Com | 18–24 months |
| CPA (US) | Valued in Big 4 / multinational KSA offices | 12–18 months |
| VAT / ZATCA compliance course | Niche but high demand now | 4–8 weeks |
If you are a B.Com fresher, start the ACCA or CMA route in parallel with your job search. Even "ACCA Part Qualified" on a CV opens doors.
Step 2 — Build the KSA-Specific Technical Skills
Being a good accountant is necessary but not sufficient. Here is what KSA employers specifically test in interviews:
IFRS as endorsed by SOCPA. Saudi Arabia follows International Financial Reporting Standards as adopted by the Saudi Organisation for Certified Public Accountants (SOCPA). The standards are substantively the same as global IFRS, but presentations sometimes follow local formats. Know IFRS 15 (revenue), IFRS 16 (leases), and IAS 36 (impairment) — these come up in practically every interview for roles above Accounts Assistant.
VAT at 15%. Saudi VAT has been 15% since 1 July 2020 (1 Dhu al-Hijjah 1441H). Understand input tax, output tax, exempt vs zero-rated supplies, and the VAT return filing cycle. The ZATCA VAT guide on zatca.gov.sa is free and comprehensive — read it.
ZATCA Fatoorah e-invoicing. Know what a Simplified Tax Invoice vs a Standard Tax Invoice requires, what the QR code fields mean (TLV encoding), and how an ERP pushes invoices to the ZATCA clearance API. You do not need to be a developer — but being able to reconcile the ERP log with ZATCA-cleared invoices makes you immediately useful.
ERP fluency. SAP and Oracle are dominant in large KSA companies. Microsoft Dynamics 365 and Odoo are common in SMEs. Get at least one certification or hands-on practice. Many employers test this with a 20-minute practical exercise in the interview.
Zakat basics. Unlike corporate income tax, Saudi companies owned by GCC nationals pay Zakat instead of corporate tax. Non-Saudi shareholders may be subject to corporate income tax at 20%. Understanding this split is a green flag in interviews for junior finance roles.
Step 3 — Build Your CV for the KSA Market
A KSA accounting CV is slightly different from what you'd send to an Indian employer:
- Lead with your degree attestation status ("Degree attested by MEA; Saudi Embassy attestation in progress" signals you are serious).
- Quantify everything. "Processed 400+ vendor invoices monthly in Tally ERP" beats "responsible for accounts payable."
- Add a line on VAT / GST exposure — even Indian GST experience translates as evidence you understand destination-based tax logic.
- Include your passport validity and visa status honestly. Employers want candidates who can join within 60–90 days.
- Keep it to two pages maximum. Saudi HR teams screen fast.

Step 4 — Where and How to Find Accounting Jobs in KSA as an Indian
The main channels that actually work:
- LinkedIn — Set location to Saudi Arabia, filter "Accounting / Auditing," and connect with Indian CA/CMA professionals already working in KSA. Warm referrals still matter enormously.
- Bayt.com and Naukrigulf.com — The two biggest Gulf-focused job boards. Set up alerts for "Accountant," "VAT Accountant," "AR Accountant," and "Finance Analyst."
- Recruitment agencies in India — Agencies like Alfahad, Gulf Placement, and others are MARA-registered and licensed to place candidates in KSA. Verify the agency's MARA licence before paying any fee.
- Direct applications to Saudi companies — Many large Saudi corporates (SABIC, Saudi Aramco, Al Rajhi, STC) post finance roles directly on their career portals.
- ICAI Saudi Arabia Chapter — If you are a CA or CA Inter student, the chapter runs networking events and sometimes job fairs. Register on the ICAI overseas chapter page.
A quick note on Saudisation (Nitaqat): Saudi labour law requires companies to maintain a certain percentage of Saudi nationals on their payroll (the percentage varies by industry and company size). Accounting roles for expatriates are most available in mid-to-large private sector companies, shared service centres, and multinational branches where the Nitaqat quota is easier to meet. Smaller Saudi family businesses may be slower to hire expats at entry level.
Step 5 — Understand the Iqama and Legal Process
Once you have an offer letter, the sponsoring employer applies for a work visa on your behalf. After you arrive in KSA, within 90 days you receive your Iqama (residence permit). Key points:
- Your employer is your Kafeel (sponsor) under the current kafala-linked system. Always ensure the offer letter specifies your job title as "Accountant" or the relevant finance title — mismatches cause problems at the Ministry of Human Resources.
- Keep your Indian passport valid for at least two years beyond your intended KSA stay.
- Salary in KSA is paid in SAR. Entry-level accountant roles typically pay SAR 3,000–5,000/month (approximately ₹65,000–₹1,10,000 at current exchange). Qualified CA / ACCA roles start at SAR 7,000–12,000/month. Senior finance managers earn SAR 15,000–25,000+.
- Most packages include accommodation allowance or provided housing, transport allowance, and annual return airfare — factor these into your total compensation comparison, not just basic salary.
Step 6 — Keep Learning Once You Are There
The KSA accounting landscape is not static. ZATCA releases new compliance circulars regularly. SOCPA updates its standards periodically. The best Indian accountants in KSA build a reputation by staying current:
- Subscribe to ZATCA's official newsletter at zatca.gov.sa.
- Follow SOCPA updates for any local amendments to IFRS endorsement.
- Consider the Certified VAT Compliance Professional (CVCP) offered by local training providers — it signals commitment to the Saudi market specifically.
- Build your network inside the Indian accounting community in KSA. Cities like Riyadh, Jeddah, and Dammam have active CA communities that share job leads, compliance updates, and mentorship.
The accountants who grow fastest in KSA are the ones who treat every month as a learning cycle — not just a billing cycle. If you want a structured way to track and close your skills gaps before you even land the first interview, explore the SuperAccountant jobs board and career resources built for students targeting professional accounting roles.
Landing an accounting job in Saudi Arabia as an Indian is genuinely achievable — but it rewards preparation. Attestation, IFRS, VAT at 15%, ZATCA Fatoorah, ERP skills, and the right job boards are the levers. Pull them in order and you move from "considering it" to "offer letter in hand" faster than most people expect.
