You have your B.Com degree, you have "Tally" written on your CV, and yet the interview call never comes — or worse, it comes and the interviewer asks you to pass a journal entry for a GST credit note and your mind goes blank. That gap between "I have done a Tally course" and "I can do the work on day one" is exactly what hiring managers at firms like KPMG's BSO division, mid-market CA firms, and manufacturing SMEs are trying to filter for. This post maps every workflow you must be able to demonstrate, and tells you how to show it off.

Why Employers Care More About Workflows Than Certificates

A Tally Prime certification tells a recruiter you sat through a course. A portfolio of practice company data — saved as a .900 backup file and walked through on screen — tells them you can work. Most Tally content online teaches features; interviewers at accounting jobs test tasks. The difference matters because entry-level roles in India (junior accountant, accounts executive, GST assistant) typically pay ₹15,000–₹25,000 per month in Tier-2 cities and ₹22,000–₹35,000 in metros, and firms at that salary band cannot afford a two-month learning curve. They hire the fresher who can handle day-one bookkeeping independently.

Before going role-by-role, take the SuperAccountant skills quiz to see which accounting competencies you already have and which ones need the most work — it takes under five minutes and gives you a personalised gap report.

Workflow 1 — Company Setup and Chart of Accounts

This is the first thing any interviewer will ask you to demonstrate live.

What to practise:

  • Create a new company in Tally Prime (F3 → Create Company), entering the correct financial year (1 April–31 March), base currency (₹), and enabling GST.
  • Set up the GSTIN, state code, and registration type (Regular / Composition) under Company GST Details.
  • Build a working chart of accounts: at minimum, create ledger groups for Capital, Fixed Assets, Current Assets, Current Liabilities, Sales, Purchases, Direct Expenses, and Indirect Expenses.
  • Create a sample GST-enabled sales ledger at 18 % with the correct Nature of Transaction set to Taxable.

Why it matters: A wrong ledger group means every report downstream is wrong. Interviewers at CA firms will literally watch your mouse move and judge whether you navigate via Gateway → Accounts Info or press the shortcut keys. Learn the shortcuts.

Workflow 2 — Voucher Entry (The Core Daily Task)

Voucher entry is the engine of every accounting job. You must be fluent in all standard voucher types:

Voucher TypeShortcutCommon Use Case
PaymentF5Vendor payment, salary, utility bills
ReceiptF6Customer payment received
ContraF4Cash deposit to bank, petty cash top-up
JournalF7Depreciation, provisions, adjustments
SalesF8GST-enabled tax invoice to customer
PurchaseF9GST-enabled bill from vendor
Debit NoteCtrl+F9Purchase return, price correction
Credit NoteCtrl+F8Sales return, discount given post-invoice

Practice drill: Take a set of 30 real-world transactions — you can find sample sets in ICAI study material or CBSE Class 12 accountancy books — and enter all of them in a single day. Time yourself. Employers expect a reasonably experienced fresher to enter 50–60 vouchers per hour accurately.

GST-specific tip: When passing a purchase voucher, ensure the GSTIN of the supplier is entered so Tally Prime auto-populates CGST/SGST or IGST based on whether the supply is intra-state or inter-state (as per the place of supply rules under Sections 8–13 of the IGST Act, 2017). Missing this step breaks your GSTR-2B reconciliation entirely.

Workflow 3 — GST Records and Returns

This is the skill that separates a ₹18,000/month offer from a ₹26,000/month offer at the same firm. GST compliance work is time-sensitive and firms bill clients for it, so a fresher who can handle it independently is genuinely valuable.

What to practise in Tally Prime:

  • Generate GSTR-1 (outward supplies) and verify that invoice-wise data matches what you entered in sales vouchers. Check B2B vs B2C classification.
  • Pull the GSTR-3B summary and cross-check Output Tax, ITC Available, and Net Tax Payable against your voucher totals.
  • Record a GST payment voucher (using the Tax Payment voucher type under Statutory) against the electronic cash ledger.
  • Handle a credit note scenario: a customer returned goods worth ₹50,000 + 18% GST. Pass the credit note, verify it appears in GSTR-1 Table 9B, and confirm ITC reversal is not triggered on your side.

For the official GSTR return formats and filing instructions, refer directly to cbic-gst.gov.in. Recruiters at firms that file returns for 30+ clients in a month will ask you to walk through this flow verbally even if there is no computer in the room.

Common fresher mistake: Creating separate ledgers for CGST Payable and CGST Input Tax Credit but leaving them under the same group. They belong under Duties & Taxes → Tax Type: GST. Wrong grouping causes the GST Audit report to throw exceptions.

Workflow 4 — Bank Reconciliation

Bank reconciliation (BRS) is asked in almost every entry-level interview. Tally Prime's BRS module under Banking → Bank Reconciliation is straightforward once you understand the underlying logic.

Practice steps:

  1. Download a three-month sample bank statement (most nationalised banks publish sample formats online).
  2. Enter all transactions as payment/receipt vouchers with the correct bank ledger.
  3. Open BRS, set the bank date, and clear matched entries one by one.
  4. Leave two or three uncleared items intentionally — a cheque issued but not presented, and a bank charge not yet recorded — and be able to explain why they are outstanding.

Interviewers will ask: "What do you do when the closing balance in Tally does not match the bank statement?" The answer is a step-by-step investigation: check for uncleared cheques, direct debits, bank charges not booked, and data entry errors. Walk through each systematically.

Workflow 5 — Inventory Management

Manufacturing, trading, and retail companies need accountants who can handle stock in Tally Prime, not just ledgers.

Core skills to demonstrate:

  • Create stock groups, stock items, units of measure (UOM), and godowns.
  • Enable batch tracking for an FMCG scenario (manufacturing date, expiry date).
  • Pass a stock journal for production: raw material consumption → finished goods.
  • Generate a Stock Summary and a Movement Analysis report to identify slow-moving items.
  • Link inventory to purchase and sales vouchers so stock quantities update automatically.

A practical tip: practise with a simple trading scenario — say, a stationery distributor buying 500 reams of A4 paper at ₹200/ream and selling 300 reams at ₹260/ream. Verify that Tally Prime's closing stock value matches your manual calculation. This kind of self-checking habit is exactly what a CA or senior accountant looks for when reviewing a fresher's work.

Workflow 6 — Month-End Reporting

Month-end closing is the final checkpoint before a company's books are considered complete for that period. Even in your first job, you will be expected to support this process.

Reports you must be able to generate and explain:

  • Trial Balance — verify that Debit = Credit; explain any unusual balances to your supervisor.
  • Profit & Loss Account — understand Gross Profit vs Net Profit; know which ledgers feed into which section.
  • Balance Sheet — check that Fixed Assets are net of depreciation, that closing stock ties to the inventory module, and that loans are correctly split between current and non-current.
  • GSTR-1 vs Sales Register reconciliation — total invoiced sales per the sales register must equal the turnover reported in GSTR-1.
  • TDS Summary — if the company deducts TDS, confirm that the TDS payable ledger balance matches what is due under the respective sections (e.g., Section 194C for contractors, Section 194J for professional fees) as per the Income Tax Act, 1961. Refer to incometax.gov.in for current TDS rates.

Portfolio tip: Export the Balance Sheet and P&L to PDF (Alt+P in Tally Prime), annotate it with brief notes explaining two or three line items, and include this in a Google Drive folder you share with interviewers. Very few freshers do this. It is a tangible differentiator.

How to Build a Practise Portfolio Before You Apply

You do not need a paid internship to have evidence of Tally Prime skills. Here is a four-week plan:

Week 1: Company setup + chart of accounts + 30 basic vouchers (payment, receipt, contra, journal).

Week 2: GST-enabled sales and purchase vouchers + credit/debit notes + generate GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B summaries.

Week 3: Bank reconciliation using a sample three-month statement + inventory setup for a simple trading company.

Week 4: Month-end closing — Trial Balance, P&L, Balance Sheet + TDS ledger review + export reports to PDF and annotate.

Back up your practice company data (Company → Backup, save as .900 file) and store it on Google Drive. When an interviewer says "show me something you have done", open the file, restore it, and walk them through the reports. This single habit will put you ahead of 90 % of candidates at the same level.

If you want structured guidance and peer accountability while doing this, the SuperAccountant cohort programme runs monthly batches specifically for commerce graduates targeting their first accounting role — it includes Tally Prime practice sets built around real employer workflows.
