A practical employability guide that maps Tally Prime, GST basics, Excel, bank reconciliation and invoicing to real entry-level accounts roles — plus a 45-day learning plan to land your first job.
By the SuperAccountant Editorial Team
You just finished your B.Com exams, and suddenly everyone is asking: "So what's your plan?" You know accounting, but you're not sure which exact skills employers want — or how to prove you have them before you've had a single job. This guide answers both questions clearly.
Why Tally and GST Skills Are the Real Entry Ticket
Employers posting accounts executive jobs for freshers in India are not looking for theoretical knowledge of the conceptual framework. They are looking for someone who can open Tally Prime on Day 1, pass a purchase entry, and file a GSTR-1 summary without panicking. That gap — between what your college taught and what the office needs on Monday morning — is exactly what makes some freshers hireable and others not.
The good news: the skill bundle is small and learnable. Master five core tools, and you qualify for the majority of entry-level roles advertised on Naukri, LinkedIn and Indeed India right now.
The Five-Skill Bundle Every Junior Accountant Needs
Here is a plain summary of what interviewers actually test in the first round:
| Skill | What the employer tests | Typical exam question |
|---|---|---|
| Tally Prime | Pass voucher entries, run Day Book, generate Balance Sheet | "Enter this purchase invoice in Tally and show me the ledger." |
| GST Basics | Distinguish CGST/SGST/IGST, identify which return to file | "A supplier in Delhi sells to a buyer in Mumbai. Which tax applies?" |
| Excel | VLOOKUP, pivot tables, basic MIS report | "Reconcile this 200-row bank statement using VLOOKUP." |
| Bank Reconciliation (BRS) | Identify timing differences, prepare BRS statement | "Pass-book shows ₹14,200 balance; cash book shows ₹12,800. Explain the gap." |
| Invoicing & Accounts Payable | Create a GST-compliant tax invoice, match PO–GRN–invoice | "What mandatory fields does a tax invoice under Sec 31 of the CGST Act carry?" |
Each skill above appears in real job descriptions. None requires a post-graduate degree. All can be practised at home with the free Tally Prime educational version and a spreadsheet.
Named Entry-Level Roles and What They Actually Involve
1. Accounts Executive (most common) Salary range at small and mid-size firms: ₹15,000–₹22,000 per month in Tier-2 cities; ₹20,000–₹30,000 in metros. Daily work: Tally data entry, vendor invoice processing, GST input tax credit (ITC) tracking under Sec 16(2)(c) of the CGST Act, and basic BRS. This is the single highest-volume fresher role.
2. Junior Accountant Usually at CA firms or mid-size trading companies. Adds a layer of finalization work — trial balance, TDS deduction under Sec 194C/194J of the Income Tax Act 1961, and preparation of Form 26AS reconciliation. Slightly higher technical bar than Accounts Executive.
3. GST Assistant / Compliance Executive Growing fast because every registered supplier must file returns monthly or quarterly. You will work with GSTR-1, GSTR-3B, and GSTR-2B matching. Familiarity with the CBIC portal at cbic-gst.gov.in is non-negotiable here.
4. Billing / Invoicing Executive Found in e-commerce, logistics and manufacturing. Core task: generate GST-compliant tax invoices, ensure e-way bill compliance for consignments above ₹50,000 (as per Rule 138 of the CGST Rules), and reconcile collections with bank credits.
5. Accounts Payable / Receivable Associate BPO-style roles at large companies' shared service centres. High volume, process-driven, good starting salary (₹18,000–₹25,000). Excel skills matter more here than Tally.
How to Demonstrate Skills Before You Have Experience
This is the real problem. Recruiters see hundreds of CVs that say "proficient in Tally and GST." Here is how you stand out:
Build a mini practice company in Tally Prime. Create a fictional trading firm — say, "Sharma Traders, Delhi" — and record one month of transactions: 20 purchase entries, 20 sales entries, one bank reconciliation, and one GSTR-1 summary. Screenshot the final Balance Sheet and Trial Balance. Attach the PDF to your CV as "Sample Work."
Complete the GSTR-1 flow on the practice portal. The GST Network offers a sandbox-like practice environment linked from the official portal. Even walking through the screens and screenshotting the invoice upload section tells an interviewer you have touched the system.
Solve one BRS problem in Excel and save the file. Take a sample bank statement (make one up), use VLOOKUP to match transactions, and highlight unmatched items. A 200-row reconciliation file on your Google Drive link says more than any line on your CV.
Get one certificate that is verifiable. Tally Education's official certification, or a structured cohort like SuperAccountant's learning cohort, gives interviewers a third-party validation they can point to when justifying a hire.
Your 45-Day Learning Plan to Get Interview-Ready
This plan assumes you have 2–3 hours per day and the free Tally Prime educational version installed.
Days 1–10 — Tally Prime foundations
- Install Tally Prime (educational mode, no cost).
- Create a company, define ledgers under correct groups.
- Record 50 vouchers: purchases, sales, receipts, payments, journal.
- Run Day Book, Trial Balance, and Profit & Loss.
- Goal: zero errors in 50 entries.
Days 11–20 — GST in Tally
- Enable GST in your practice company.
- Record interstate (IGST) and intrastate (CGST+SGST) invoices.
- Generate GSTR-1 summary inside Tally and cross-check with the CBIC portal format.

Days 21–30 — Excel for accountants
- Functions: SUM, IF, VLOOKUP/XLOOKUP, COUNTIF, pivot tables.
- Build a BRS template: two columns — cash book vs. pass-book — with auto-flag for mismatches.
- Build a debtor ageing report (0–30 days, 31–60 days, 61–90 days, 90+ days).
Days 31–38 — TDS basics and invoicing
- Study Sec 194C (contractor payments) and Sec 194J (professional fees) of the Income Tax Act 1961.
- Learn TDS deduction calculation: ₹85,000 contractor payment × 1% = ₹850 TDS, net payable ₹84,150.
- Practice creating a GST-compliant tax invoice with all mandatory fields (Sec 31, CGST Act): GSTIN, HSN code, tax rate, place of supply.
Days 39–45 — Interview preparation and job applications
- Prepare your "Sharma Traders" Tally PDF and Excel BRS file.
- Practise answering: "Walk me through a bank reconciliation" and "What is the difference between GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B?"
- Apply to at least 10 roles on Naukri.com, LinkedIn, and Internshala using role-specific keywords: "accounts executive fresher," "junior accountant Tally GST."
Common Mistakes Freshers Make in Accounting Interviews
Saying "I know Tally" without showing it. Every interviewer has heard this. The ones who get hired open the laptop and start typing.
Confusing GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B. GSTR-1 reports outward supplies (sales). GSTR-3B is the summary self-declared return used for ITC claim and tax payment. These are different forms with different due dates. Muddle them and the interview ends fast.
Ignoring TDS entirely. Almost every employer deducts TDS. If you can't explain what Form 16A is or how to check Form 26AS on the Income Tax portal, you're leaving marks on the table.
Undervaluing Excel. A Tally system can go down; Excel never does. Employers in smaller firms use Excel for 40% of their daily work. Knowing pivot tables alone will get you shortlisted over a dozen candidates who don't.
How to Use SuperAccountant to Close the Skill Gap Faster
The 45-day plan above works if you're self-disciplined. If you want structured accountability, topic-by-topic assessments, and a community of students in the same situation, the SuperAccountant cohort takes you through Tally Prime, GST, TDS and Excel in a sequence designed specifically for B.Com and CA Inter students preparing for their first job. You don't have to figure out what to study next — the curriculum does that for you.
The bottom line for B.Com freshers looking for accounting jobs: employers don't need you to know everything. They need you to know Tally entries, GST return basics, Excel reconciliation, and invoicing — and to demonstrate that knowledge in a ten-minute practical test. That is a finite, achievable goal. Start with the 45-day plan, build your practice company, and walk into that interview with something to show.
