Accounts Executive Interview Questions for Freshers in India
A placement-mentor's guide to the exact questions asked in entry-level accounting interviews — with expected answers, real salary benchmarks, and a week-by-week preparation plan for B.Com and M.Com graduates.

You have polished your resume, lined up two or three interviews, and then — nothing. The silence after a first-round rejection stings especially hard when you realise the interviewer asked the same question every accounts executive interview asks, and you simply were not ready for it. This guide fixes that. It covers the exact questions that appear in entry-level accounting interviews at firms ranging from mid-size CA offices to listed companies, along with the answers a hiring manager actually wants to hear.
Why Accounts Executive Interviews Catch Freshers Off Guard
Most interview prep material floating online is generic — aptitude puzzles, HR questions about your strengths and weaknesses, the occasional "tell me about yourself." Accounts executive interviewers skip most of that and go straight to applied knowledge: GST reconciliation, TDS sections, journal entries, and Tally Prime navigation. If you studied these topics in college but never applied them in a real office, the gap shows within the first five minutes.
The role itself is demanding from day one. An accounts executive in a typical SME or CA firm handles vendor invoices, bank reconciliation, GST data entry, TDS computation, and monthly MIS — sometimes all in the same week. Interviewers are therefore screening for practical readiness, not theoretical brilliance.
The Core Technical Questions (and What to Actually Say)
These appear in almost every junior accountant interview in India, regardless of industry.
1. "Walk me through the journal entry for a GST-inclusive purchase."
A weak answer names the ledgers vaguely. A strong answer specifies: debit Purchases (net value), debit Input CGST and Input SGST (for intra-state) or Input IGST (for inter-state), and credit Accounts Payable / Creditor. Mention that the ITC claim is valid only when the supplier has filed GSTR-1 and the credit appears in your GSTR-2B, as required under Section 16(2)(c) of the CGST Act, 2017. That one statutory reference signals you read beyond your textbook.
2. "What is the difference between CGST, SGST, and IGST?"
CGST and SGST are levied simultaneously on intra-state supply — each typically at half the applicable rate. IGST applies to inter-state supply or imports and is levied at the full rate. Revenue from CGST goes to the Centre; SGST to the state of consumption; IGST is apportioned between the Centre and the destination state. Confirm you can verify current rates at cbic-gst.gov.in.
3. "Under which section is TDS deducted on professional fees?"
Section 194J of the Income Tax Act, 1961. The threshold is ₹30,000 per annum for most professional services, and the standard rate is 10%. For a technical service that is not a professional service, the rate dropped to 2% following an amendment. Verify current thresholds at incometax.gov.in. Knowing the section number — not just "TDS on professional fees" — sets you apart.
4. "How do you perform a bank reconciliation?"
Describe the three-step process: (a) start with the closing balance in the cash book; (b) identify items in the bank statement not yet in the cash book (direct credits, charges, dishonoured cheques) and adjust; (c) identify items in the cash book not yet cleared by the bank (outstanding cheques, deposits in transit) and adjust. The two balances should then agree. Mention that in Tally Prime this is done under Banking → Bank Reconciliation, and flag any stale uncleared entries older than 90 days for review.
5. "What are the golden rules of accounting?"
Personal account: Debit the receiver, credit the giver. Real account: Debit what comes in, credit what goes out. Nominal account: Debit all expenses and losses, credit all incomes and gains. Follow up by noting that under Ind AS (converged with IFRS), the focus has shifted to a balance-sheet approach, but the golden rules remain foundational for day-to-day bookkeeping entries in Tally Prime and Zoho Books.
Tally Prime and Software Questions You Will Definitely Face
Almost every hiring manager asks at least one software question, because they want you productive by Week 2 — not Week 12.
- "How do you create a ledger in Tally Prime?" Gateway of Tally → Accounts Info → Ledgers → Create. Name the ledger, select the group (e.g., Sundry Creditors, Duties & Taxes), and configure GST details if applicable.
- "How do you record a GST sales invoice in Tally Prime?" Gateway → Accounting Vouchers → F8 (Sales) → set the party, item, and tax ledgers. Tally auto-populates CGST/SGST or IGST based on the party's state.
- "Have you used Zoho Books?" If yes, mention auto-bank feeds, GST return filing from within the portal, and the client-collaboration portal. If no, say you have used Tally Prime extensively and are comfortable learning Zoho Books in parallel — most firms expect this candour.
If you are unsure how strong your software and accounting fundamentals actually are, take the SuperAccountant skill quiz before your interview — it benchmarks you against what hirers test.
HR and Situational Questions That Trip Up Freshers
"Why accounts, not finance or marketing?"
Do not say "I enjoy numbers." Say: "I want to build a strong technical foundation in statutory compliance — GST, TDS, audit — before moving into FP&A or controllership. An accounts executive role is the fastest way to handle real transactions from Day 1."
"How do you handle a deadline when two tasks arrive at the same time?"
Give a concrete scenario: "If the bank reconciliation for month-end and a vendor payment run both land on the 31st, I would complete the payment run first because it has an external cash-flow consequence, then complete the reconciliation. I would inform my supervisor immediately if I needed an extension on either."
"What is your expected CTC?"
Use data, not guesswork.

A Four-Week Interview Preparation Plan
Week 1 — Foundations Revise the golden rules, Ind AS 1 (presentation of financial statements), and the chart of accounts structure. Practice 20 journal entries daily — purchases, sales, debit notes, credit notes, depreciation. Open a free Tally Prime Educational version and create a sample company with 10 ledgers.
Week 2 — Indirect Tax Read the CGST Act summary for Sections 9 (levy), 16 (ITC eligibility), 39 (returns), and 50 (interest on late payment) at cbic-gst.gov.in. Understand the GSTR-1 → GSTR-2B → GSTR-3B filing sequence. Practice one mock GST invoice entry in Tally Prime end to end.
Week 3 — Direct Tax and Reconciliation Memorise the key TDS sections: 192 (salary), 194C (contractors), 194J (professional/technical), 194I (rent). Practise three bank reconciliation problems from your B.Com workbook. Learn how to generate Form 26AS and Annual Information Statement on incometax.gov.in.
Week 4 — Mock Interviews and Soft Skills Record yourself answering the five technical questions above. Review your marked sheets and projects — interviewers often ask "give an example from your studies." Research the company: What industry are they in? What GST rate applies to their main product? One sharp industry question at the end of the interview separates memorable candidates from the rest.

Common Mistakes That Get Freshers Rejected
- Vague answers on TDS rates. Saying "around 10%" without naming the section suggests you crammed rather than understood.
- No hands-on software experience. Download the Tally Prime free version the day you read this. Even one week of practice shows in your confidence.
- Underquoting salary because of fear. Accepting ₹1.5 L in Mumbai when the market pays ₹2.8 L harms your baseline for every future negotiation.
- Not reading the JD. If the job description mentions SAP, do not walk in talking only about Tally. Spend two hours on SAP FI basics on YouTube.
- Ignoring soft skills. Accounts executives work daily with vendors, auditors, and senior management. Interviewers notice if you cannot explain a reconciliation difference clearly in plain language.
What Happens After You Land the Offer
Negotiation does not end at the offer letter. Clarify: Is the CTC gross or cost-to-company? Are PF contributions included in the stated CTC (they often are, reducing take-home)? What is the appraisal cycle? Is there a bond clause? Under the Payment of Gratuity Act, 1972, gratuity becomes payable after five continuous years of service — worth knowing before you sign.
Once in the role, your first 90 days matter more than your interview. Document every process you touch. Ask your senior to review your first three GST reconciliations. Build a checklist for month-end close. Freshers who show systematic thinking within the first quarter get the next promotion cycle ahead of those who just show up.
